1FoodSaver 3480 Save your moneyJan 11, 2009

This item is not a saver of money. It might preserve your food for a longer period, after you get it to work properly, but I would rather shop more often than use this system. Very fustrating. First of all, you will have a total of 6 inches of waste for each bag, 3 inches at top and bottom. In opening a new roll of film, the company places 2 inches of tape to close the roll, therefore, wasting 2 more inches of plastic for the consumer. Totally unnecessary and a boost for their sales. As they use tape that cannot be peeled off, but needs to be cut off. If you do not cut exactly straight the machine will not seal, wasting more plastic. The sealer will not seal without this 6 inches of waste space. Sometimes, the machine will vacumn when you want it to seal, or seal when you want it to vacumn. The instructions state, insert bag, press vacumn, the machine does not work that way. As soon as you insert the required 3 inches it will seal and not vacumn. What a waste of money and time.
I sealed a package of dried pasta, only to have the system break up the pasta as it was sealing. The pasta contnued to break up in pieces for 5 minutes after sealing.
I understand that this sealing process is good for storing photos and silver. But, that is not what I purchased it for.
Extremely expensive to operate and purchase. Sorry that I purchased it.

5love itOct 14, 2009

i borrowed my mother in law's to seal up some meat that was on sale. it worked great. I only wasted about an inch on the bottom and 3 on the top, that's what the directions state. 1st i cut my bag, pushed the seal button put my bag in to create the bottom seal, put my meat in (owners manual says to freeze meat for about an hour to seal juices.) stuck my bag back in and it sucked the air out and i was finished. I also sealed my homemade soup in it (still in freezer) but i am so looking forward to getting my own. not as hard as the other reviewers made it seem.

4Not having the problems others are having.Oct 17, 2009

I have been using foodsaver vacuum systems for around 15 years. I was looking forward to finally getting one that was automatic. My old vac still works great, but I wanted all the "bells and whistles" of the new one. My old one will be passed down. I read all the reviews on this item after I ordered it and they made me really nervous. I figured I would try it and then return it is I wasn't happy. I did not have any problems. You do have to get used to inserting the bag. I did not find that it wastes three inches on each end of the bag. It does leave abou 1 1/2" on each end. It has a much wider seal strip than the older sealers. I bought a large quantity of chicken today and sealed it with absolutely no problems. I'll be keeping it.
