4Decent Foodsaver Univeral LidsApr 16, 2008
By Darby
I own a bunch of these lids, in assorted sizes, along with a Tilia Foodsaver (I forget which model). The smaller lids are good for sealing things like cleaned and recycled 8, 12, 16, 24 and 40 oz jars (typically old jelly, salsa and honey jars), and the larger lids are useful for things like large 5 liter 'beehive' jars (which can hold things like 5-10 lbs of rice, dried grains, polenta meal, orzo pasta, sugar, etc.)

I've found them to be pretty handy, but they're definitely not perfect. My chief nit is that I wish the tilia foodsaver created a stronger vaccum on it's univeral container port - but that's the foodsaver's fault, not the lid's fault. Also, in order for these lids to hold a good seal for any decent length of time, the jars you use them on must have lips that are pristinely clean, not too thin, and they must be free of irregularities and/or scratches. Jars that lose their seal after a few days are usually (but not always) mostly the fault of the jar's lip, not the univeral lid.

These lids generally hold a decent vaccum for several weeks, but thereafter, regular rechecking, even with proven jars, typically turns up 1 jar in 10 that's lost pressure and needed resealing ... so these lids clearly dont hold a perfect vaccum for a great lenth of time. The best results I've seen so far is about 3-6 months for a given jar - and it's invariably the larger jars with wide flat lips that seem to hold the best seal.

However, these lids still offer a better closure, and definite freshness improvement over just a loose lid, for countertop and undercounter storage. Staleness, meal worms, and other pests, are typically no longer a problem once you make the jump from store-bought cardboard containers and plastic bags to proper glass jars fitted with univeral lids.

For me, it's been worth it.

1universal food-saver lidsAug 23, 2007
By S. Mallon "scmallon"
The ability to seal jars with the Universal Lids was difficult with the larger lid and impossible with the standard lid. I bought two sets with similar results. I called the company for suggestions and received a "brisk" response that I didn't season the lids properly. Don't buy it! The hassle is not worth it.

The wide mouth mason jar lid sealer works fairly well, but the standard mason jar lid sealer is dificult to seal. The Ball standard lids seem to work better than the Kerr lids, for what ever reason.

1BE VERY CAREFULMar 19, 2009

Before you waste your money on this product, please read all of the reviews.

This item falls apart after just a few uses. I hate to give it even one star but Amazon does not permit us to give any less.

If you purchase from Amazon, they will take it back but you still have to pay the shipping. If you purchase directly from Jarden Consumer Solutions, they will not, under any circumstances, replace or refund. The "customer care" representative there told me that Jarden sells their products with no warranty period. She stated that they have not had problems with this item and I referred her to the Amazon reviewers who have stated that they have reported it to Jarden's customer care and have gotten the same frustrating denials that they gave to me. She further went on to state that her two small children could operate this product so there must be something wrong with me. I asked to speak with her supervisor and she refused to let me.

The Foodsaver unit and bags are great products but most of the accessories are junk. The small universal lids work most of the time but all 3 of the large universal lids that I purchased failed. The jar sealers work on a hit or miss basis and the canisters crack. If you read the reviews here on those items you will find a way to seal jars without purchasing most of these products. You just buy one large canister and place the jar you want to seal (with a canning lid and band on it) into it the Foodsaver canister. Attach the hose to the Foodsaver unit and push the "canister" button on the unit. After the unit stops, remove the hose from the canister and push the gray button to release the air. The jar seals. It works every time.

I have purchased every accessory that they make for the Foodsaver and feel ripped off and abused by Jarden Consumer Solutions. The unit is great but the accessories do not hold up and Jarden is aware and doesn't seem to care. Buyer beware.

5Great for short termOct 31, 2006

For longer term storage I always use the foodsaver canisters or the bags but these are great for slapping a quick cover on some left overs and having them stay fresh for the next few days.
