Buyer Beware - Easily Broken During ShipmentNov 12, 2009
By Levenia R. Lawson
"Levenia R. Lawson"
I have been canning for many years and this was my 1st order through Amazon for jars. I normally buy locally. Unfortunately of the two cases I purchases one case had five broken jars and one cracked jar. The 2nd case had one cracked jar only. For some reason whoever did the packaging only placed air packs on one side of the box. For glass jars that touch each other with no cardboard separators and since this was an order of two 12-packs of jars, I would have expected better care. I will be returning my full order for a refund and will continue to shop locally. I went with an Amazon Prime order since it was such a great deal and I have never had a problem in the past with other merchandise. This was shipped very poorly.
PLEASE NOTE - SINCE THE JARS DO NOT HAVE CARDBOARD SEPERATORS BETWEEN THEM, YOU MAY EXPERIENCE SCRATCHING FROM THE JARS RUBBING AGAINST EACH OTHER DURING SHIPPING.
The jars have a raised image for decoration. Almost all of my jars were scratched, but would not affect canning unless it turned into a crack. Each case is shrinked wrapped by the manufacturer. This is a manufacturer issue and of no fault of Amazon.

WARNING: Ball/Kerr lids lined with BPASep 29, 2010
By J. Cowart It was disappointing to learn that all Ball/Kerr metal canning jar lids are lined with the toxin BPA. I hope they're working on a lid that is 100% free of BPA, but in the mean time, if you're searching for lids without BPA, I suggest Tattler lids. They are reusable and guaranteed to last a lifetime. There are others on the market as well.

Ball Canning JarsJan 12, 2011
By gailshop I purchased these jars as a Christmas gift for my daughter and her husband who are planning on trying their hand at canning this coming summer. They live in another state so I had to wait until they got to come home to open their gifts. That is why it has taken me a while to write this review. They both got a kick out of these jars. My daughter only wanted jars that had "Mason" or "Ball" stamped on the front of them. My mom passed away in January 2010 and she was from TN so she canned all of her life. When I had to clean her house out I saved one of her pressure canners for my daugther and her husband and I had a very enjoyable time finding little things to go with the canner. We all had a fun time with this particular gift because, as it turned out, Mom had a LOT of canning jars with "Ball" and "Mason" imprinted on the front. They definitely enjoyed getting these jars anyway because it just reinforced their knowledge that when "they talk I listen" when it comes to things they enjoy doing or want to attmept to do. Getting all of the "stuff" I purchased on Amazon.com for their canning endeavor made them even more excited about starting to can this coming summer.

Best for home useJan 31, 2010

If you've been dismayed by loss of food due to breakage caused by reusing mayonnaise and other bought food jars, you already know why Ball Mason Jars are the best for canning, whether you use the boiling water or pressure cooker method. The commercial food jars were not meant for home canning use. The Ball Mason Jars are.
They come in many different sizes, the most popular being the quarts and pints. I use all of the sizes down to the 4 oz.
I don't recommend buying them online unless you can't get them locally. Shipping will add horrendously to the cost, unless you can get it free. You may be able in some cases to order through an online division of a local store to get them shipped free so you can go and pick them up.
But for all the work you do to preserve food, you'll want the best possible equipment. I recommend Ball Mason very highly
